The SOKA in their name is from the evangelical Buddhist organization. They are technically an outreach program for, Soka Gakkai International.

The corps was formed in 1954 as the Soka Gakkai (Fuji) Brass Band. Their official competitive history begins during the 1993/4 JMBA season. Corps name was changed to SOKA Renaissance Vanguard in March 1994. They compete almost exclusively within the JMBA regional system, and have swapped first, second, or third place with Aimachi and the Yokohama Robins at national finals for years now.
