2019 Show Announcement
The Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni Drum & Bugle Corps proudly present their 25th Anniversary
Celebration and 2019 repertoire.

The 2019 program opens with the Spanish flair of two Caballeros signatures — Call to the Bulls and
The Rumps, then charges directly into a driving Larry Kerchner jazz arrangement of Alfred Newman’s
Conquest from the movie, CAPTAIN FROM CASTILE, featuring a spectacular Soprano duet. The Corps’
drum line will then thrill you with Les Park’s The Bomb drum solo, introduced in the 1960s.

The Kerchner original, Tequila Mockingbird, is a lively Conga featuring three duets and a trio that will
make you want to get up and dance. Then hold onto your seats as the Alumni introduce Larry
Kerchner's Spanish Heat, which is highlighted by a gorgeous Mellophone solo and a breathtaking
Soprano quintet. Next, step back for the Alumni Corps' perennial Color Presentation of Kerchner’s
1972 arrangement of Flamenco Cha Cha, which features an exciting Soprano trio, a magnificent
company front and our proud and patriotic Alumni Honor Guard.

The Caballeros’ Alumni signature drum solo combines old and new, beginning with Jack Pratt's
Caballeros 1972, followed by our own Alumni Drum-to-Drum Solo by John Smith. Andrew Lloyd
Webber's Don’t Cry for Me Argentina from the Broadway show, EVITA, features both a beautiful
Mellophone and sweet Soprano solo. And finally — you’ll leave with the memory that only the
Caballeros Alumni can deliver in Larry Kerchner’s exciting Cabs Finale 2019.

For our 25th Anniversary, the Color Guard will be splendidly featured in silver with more than 20
guard members incorporating flags, rifles and body movement designed to complement our 25th
anniversary repertoire.

The Hawthorne Caballeros Alumni Corps was founded in 1994 and is celebrating their 25th season.
The Corps Director is Paul Bongiovi, the Musical Arranger and Instructor is Larry Kerchner, the
Percussion Arranger and instructor is John Smith, Drill Designer is Kent Pennell, and the Color Guard
Design and Instruction is Ann Durborow, and Mary Lou Bonn.

The Hawthorne Caballeros from Hawthorne, New Jersey, have maintained a strong alumni association for many years. In 1994 the Association spawned another unit, the Caballeros Alumni Drum and Bugle Corps.

Organized by a small, enthusiastic group of former corps members, the Alumni Corps quickly grew and continues strong, currently numbering more than one hundred members. Originally open only to former Caballeros members, the Caballeros Alumni Corps now welcomes all qualified applicants. Currently the corps' membership is made up of players from several states, and spans all five decades of the Caballeros' history.

In addition to assisting the competition corps wherever and whenever possible, one of the purposes for launching the Alumni Corps was to return to some of the great music from the fifties, sixties, and seventies, bringing back memories for older players and fans, and exposing younger fans to the music that made the Caballeros famous in earlier years. As one of the few alumni corps with a full field show, however, the Caballeros Alumni Corps remains popular.

The corps has been in great demand from the start, but unlike the competition corps, the Alumni Corps maintains a somewhat less rigorous schedule, and is strictly an exhibition and parade corps.

Peter Bishop is the corps director and business manager, and on the field, the corps is in the capable hands of Chuck Bishop, who holds the distinction of having been a drum major with all three Hawthorne corps: the Muchachos, the Caballeros, and now, the Caballeros Alumni Corps. Chris Sortino is the current alumni president.

The alumni corps is associated with Hawthorne American Legion Post 199.
