The Lake Erie Fanfare competition was established in Erie, Pennsylvania, in 1982, and its sponsors and others in the community set the long-term goal of eventually fielding a junior corps to compete in it themselves. In 1993, the senior corps Erie Excaliber decided to call it quits. Their donation of a few horns, drums and a truck gave the new young corps its start.

Formed in 1993, the Lake Erie Regiment is a Division III member of Drum Corps International (DCI) and Drum Corps Midwest (DCM). The corps’ 2001 roster included members from Pennsylvania, New York, Ohio, and Michigan. Any musician aged 12 to 21 may join the Lake Erie Regiment. The corps is based in Erie, Pennsylvania, in the far northwest corner of the state.

Lake Erie Regiment has progressed tremendously since its formation, finishing the 2001 season as the Canadian National Champions in Division III and then attaining eighth place at the DCI Division III World Championships in Buffalo, New York. In 2002, the Regiment finished 16th in DCI Division III Prelims. The 2004 version of LER was the DCM Division III Champions with a show called "Voices at the Crossroads." The corps gives back to its community with two shows and several parades in Erie every summer.

But the Regiment is more than just drum corps; it is an organization that fosters a caring, family-like atmosphere. Members learn more than just marching. Winning and losing, fatigue and exhilaration, and growing as individuals while being part of a larger whole are all part of the experience that LER fosters. The members of the Regiment grow physically, mentally, and emotionally. The lessons and life skills they take with them continue to serve them and define their adult lives.

In support of the Regiment is the Lake Erie Fanfare. This all-volunteer, non-profit group is dedicated to promoting educational, artistic, and family values through music training, including drum and bugle corps. It was organized in 1983 to cultivate the musical talent, artistic ability, and creative enterprise of youth in Erie and the surrounding areas. Fanfare strongly believes that discipline, confidence, responsibility, teamwork, and self-reliance are discovered through group efforts. The Lake Erie Regiment also receives support from a number of local businesses and organizations.
