"Hi! We are the Nee-Hi's, an all girl drum and bugle corps from Clinton,Iowa introducing ourselves to all of you in Drum Corps land. We are the only all girl drum and bugle corps in the State of Iowa. You will be hearing a lot about us in the coming months. Our color guard is already entering competition. They entered their very first contest at Arlington Heights and they placed 17th out of 27 corps competing at this contest which included some of the best corps in the Midwest so we feel they did a real good job for our first time out. Now they are working real hard to polish up their drill and correcting their mistakes.
There is no sleeping late on Sunday mornings for the members of the Nee-Hi's. Practice which is held at the National Guard Armory begins at 10:30 A.M. sharp and lasts until 3:30 P.M. with a break for lunch. During these five hours the girls are placed in the capable hands of Jim Sullivan, Manager; and Phil Alongi, corps director plus our instructors who include Brian Pennington, bugles; Larry Snider, drums; Tom Madsen, color guard; and Hank Grana, drill. Then on Monday night from 6:30 through 9:30 we hold another practice for drill alone.
Since membership has increased from 45 girls last year to the present 100 girls everyone is working hard to be picked for a spot in the drill. Our color guard has preceded the corps in competition but everyone is looking forward to the corps first year of competition this summer. Although the prospect may have some shaking in their boots, it will be an exciting experience for all of the girls. Oh! speaking of boots, this is a new look the girls will be sporting, White Patina boots will replace the knee-high stockings and white sneakers formerly worn.
You will be hearing through DCWorld a lot from Iowa corps this summer. We have a very fine corps from Cedar Rapids called the Cedar Rapids Cadets. This corps is the top corps in the State of Iowa at the present time. We also have the Fort Dodge Lanciers from Fort Dodge,Iowa and the Chevaliers from Waterloo,Iowa plus our own Nee-Hi's from Clinton.Iowa. We hope someday Iowa will be as big in drum corps work as Illinois. So much for this time. You will be hearing from us again next issue.
