The Akroyd Senior Drum and Bugle Corps traveled all the way to Los Angeles to win the 1938 American Legion National Championships. While they were gone, a hurricane swept through New England, killing some 600 people and severely damaging the corps' hometown of Marlboro, Massachusetts. Immediately after the winning competition, all firemen, electrical workers and natural gas workers in the corps had to grab a plane home from Los Angeles to help out.
