The Squires was a junior marching and maneuvering corps based in Watkins Glen, New York. The corps was formed in 1964, under the sponsorship of the American Legion, spearheaded by Vern Alling, Chuck Calhoun, and Carl Usley, who were just trying to keep the kids off the street. Those kids' inaugural performance was on Memorial Day, 1965.

The corps was primarily a parade organization for the first several years, with the occasional field competition thrown in. A miserable 18th place at the 1969 New York American Legion Championship convinced the Squires' leadership, however, that greater emphasis on field performance might be a good career path.

By 1971 the Squires had a feeder corps, the Pages, as well as a winter guard group, and they were performing somewhere year 'round somewhere in the area. And they began to win on the field; the Penn York Class B Championship was the first. Long-time DCI voice Steve Rondinaro was reporting the group's progress for a local radio station about now, at age 16.

The Squires' first tour took place in 1973, the year they won the Penn York Championships. With DCI Championships held just 25 miles away in 1974, the corps competed and slipped into associate membership with a 24th place Open Class finish. They moved up to 13th in 1975, the peak of their DCI accomplishments. Other respectable finishes continued, however, including a 1977 third place in the U.S. Open. The corps' success was drawing a large percentage of its membership from outside the Watkins Glen area.

The demands and expense of national competition caught up with the Squires eventually, however, and they were unable to field a corps in 1982. But alumni could look back with pride on the group's accomplishments: first or second place in nearly 100 contests, four consecutive state championships, and five top-25 DCI finishes. Proud work for a small-town corps.
