The 1931 National Convention of the American Legion was held in Detroit. The Commonwealth Edison Post #118 Drum and Bugle Corps serenaded the general offices of the Detroit Edison Company during the Convention. In the spring of 1932, the Thomas A. Edison post # 187 Senior Drum and Bugle Corps was organized as a direct result of the action of the Commonwealth Edison Drum and Bugle Corps.

The Thomas A. Edison post #187 Drum and Bugle Corps officially took the name of the "Lamplighters" in 1955. The Corps colors were Kelly Green and Gold.

The Edison Lamplighters have been State Champions continually since 1949 except in 1951 and hard at practice getting the unit in shape for the 1959 State and National Competition.

In the 1951 National Convention in Miami, the Edison Lamplighters entered National Competition for the first time and placed 17th. In 1953 they placed 16th,16th in 1954,14th in 1955,9th in 1956,and 13th in 1958. The corps did not attend the National Convention in 1952 or 1957.
At the writing of this article we are contemplating a corps made up of a 27 man horn line,a 9 man drum section, an 8 man color guard, a color guard sergeant, and 2 drum majors.

The horn line had high "G. E. Horns" in the Chicago Prelims. The horn line and the drum line have improved more than in any previous year and we are eagerly looking forward to the National Convention.

Always careful about invoking a hallowed name in Detroit, the AL post asked the permission of Mina, the widow of Thomas Edison, for permission to use the Lamplighter name.
