The Corps was formed in 1956 as a part of Boy Scout Troop 704 in Richmond – a troop sponsored by St. Bridget School (K-8). In an effort to attract and retain older kids, The Corps became independent from Troop 704 and was sponsored by the Lakeside chapter of The American Legion.

The founder of Lee’s Lieutenant’s was Bill Van Horn – who had also been the Scoutmaster of 704. ‘Mr. V’ as he was called taught drums; Bruce Locke was his assistant and taught horn. As a unit, and having absolutely no counterparts in our nearby geographic area, they took inspiration from recordings and some old 8mm films that Mr. V somehow obtained showcasing the Hawthorne Caballeros, and others corps from NJ, MA, and the Midwest.

Practice sessions were held every Saturday morning in the Old Grays Armory in downtown Richmond – and lasted for 3-4 hours. Mr. V had a vision of what he wanted the corps to be as a unit – and was both tireless in his quest to mold them into such and unfailing in his encouragement to each member individually.
