"Four weeks ago a new drum corps was born in Bridgeport. Thirty-seven youngsters, green, inexperienced, without the vaguest idea of their ventures, banned together under the guidance of a group of people interested in the welfare of these youthful drum corps aspirants.
The corps, to be known as the Park City Crusaders, marched in the Monroe Memorial Day Parade, Sunday, May 25, as an experiment to evaluate the talents and the capabilities of the members of a completely new corps. As a result of this experiment, the Crusaders will be trained to become a competing corps in the near future.
A few of the corps members have had a minimum of experience as former members of the defunct Marionettes and Musketeers Corps. The rest are being trained on horns by Joel Ames and Eric Ferringo of the Trumbull Cadets, and on drill, by Charles Kimmer of the World Open Champions, Skylarks. The corps director is George Tolster. The Crusaders will appear in several parades this season to create activity during the summer months. During the winter the corps will be taught the music to be used next season in their field presentation. Plans are being formulated to build a horn line of twenty-seven, a drum line of twelve, and a color guard of sixteen.
The Crusaders rehearse on Mondays and Fridays at the Marchigan Hall, Beers St. The time is 6:30 to 8:30, and an invitation is extended to any young person interested in becoming a member of this new corps. Openings are available in the horn and drum lines and in the color guard for boys and girls. The only qualifications being the desire to be a member of a drum corps."
